Types of Urban Regimes

Municipal Corporation

  • Municipal Corporation is built for major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata. Hyderabad, Bangalore and other cities.
  • The three jurisdictions of the Municipal Corporation include the Council, the Standing Committee and the Commissioner.
  • The head of the corporation is the Mayor, Deputy-Mayor is his assistant. He presides over the assembly of councils.
  • The commissioner is the chief officer of the municipality. He is appointed by the State government.
  • Municipal Council (Municipality)

  • The establishment of the Municipal Council is made in those small cities which have areas with a population of more than one lakh and up to 5 lakh.
  • The election of all the seats of the Municipal Council is direct. For this, the entire Municipal Council area is divided into wards.
  • Councilor - The representative of the wards is called.
  • The term of the Municipal Council is fixed at 5 years.
  • Ward Members - Members of the Municipal Board.
  • The elected members elect a Chairman and Vice- chairman of the Municipal Board / Council.
  • They can be removed through a Motion of No Confidence, but notice of the motion of no confidence cannot be given within one year of assuming office.
  • Attendance of one third of the total number of council members is mandatory for quorum of meetings.
